“North and South, The Musical”  is based on English author Elizabeth Gaskell's 1855 novel and tells the story of Margaret Hale, a minister's daughter, who is forced to move with her father from the beautiful rural south of England to the northern industrial town of Milton.  Amidst the social unrest of cotton mill workers fighting for a better life, Margaret meets John Thornton, young owner of a mill.  Their compelling and tempestuous romance is set against a backdrop of growing tension between "Masters" and "Hands," in a conflict-ridden world where only love can conquer all differences.

The workshop, directed by Timothy Kennedy, includes the talented cast of Erik Bryan, Paul Edwards, Julia Johanos, Tim Kennedy, Sharon Kay White and Jake Williamson.

Interest in the works of Elizabeth Gaskell, a contemporary of Dickens, has grown steadily over the past years.  As a Unitarian dissenter living in the industrial town of Manchester, Gaskell wrote with compassion but at-times bold frankness about controversial issues of the day including the general poverty of the working classes, the hardships of men working in mines and factories, and women working in mills. After enjoying an idyllic middle class childhood in the country, she was shocked and saddened to see families living in slums eking out a miserable existence.

Marcia Marchesi was 2003 Colorado Commissioned Composer, and twice a recipient of the ASCAPLUS composition award.  She studied at the Hochschule fuer Musik und Darstellende Kunst (Vienna, Austria) and at the University of Colorado at Boulder.  Her music has been performed on NPR and music venues all over the world.

Patricia Marchesi teaches English literature at Northern Arizona University.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder.  They started writing musicals over 20 years ago while in high school, and this is their sixth musical collaboration.
